One of the Mad King’s games is to play Rock, Paper, Scissors with individuals. Unfortunately for the Mad King, he’s a rock-using moron. I played him three times and won three times.

Guild Wars Halloween

Note to potential Guild Wars gamblers: In a game where most men will choose “Rock” because of its presentation of strength, and in a game where /scissors is significantly harder to type than either /rock or /paper, Paper becomes the ultimate weapon.

Guild Wars Halloween

The Mad King is also notorious for his lame jokes, which you must laugh at otherwise he will kill you. Heckling him was great fun.

A shot from eye-level at the big guy.

Whew! That’s all.

General Updates

So, as you might be able to tell, I’m anticipating Nightfall a bit. From everything I’ve heard so far, Nightfall is the best of the Guild Wars games. Though Prophecies has its weak points, I consider it a pretty darn good investment for what I’ve gotten out of it. Even though there are a number of what I consider critical game issues that ArenaNet still hasn’t resolved with Nightfall, and doesn’t seem to have any interest in resolving, the promise of a substantial campaign and lots of pretty new things and places is tough for me to resist. The only downside is the $50 price tag for what is, in essence, an expansion pack. A $30 price tag is a lot more palatable to me, so when I saw it available for that price today I jumped on it.

I don’t have my hands on it yet, and I got the cheap shipping so it’ll probably take two weeks, but the price simply could not be beat: $30 for a game that’s two weeks old. I was even considering purchasing another copy for a friend, but unfortunately orders are limited to one per person (or, more likely, per card, but I didn’t want to bother with the hassle of two completely separate orders). In case you’re interested the $30 deal was found via GoGamer.com, but it’s only around for another eight or so hours.

On another note, yesterday I took a bit of stock on the things I want to and need to accomplish this month and realized that NaNoWriMo is just not going to fit in here. I’m a bit disappointed, but I’d rather dedicate more time and effort on things that I can finish rather than splitting my attention with another fairly substantial and time-consuming project that will not be finished in any meaningful sense by the end of November. I’ll inevitably pick this up again some other time, but I’m not going to lock myself into any definite time frame.

Guild Wars Video Roundup

The end of October was a pretty interesting time in Guild Wars. Despite prior accounts that the Halloween event would not take place, ArenaNet managed to pull it off. Simultaneously, the new expansion pack / standalone game, Guild Wars: Nightfall, was released for public consumption. I’ve got a fair number of screenshots and whatnot that I want to show off, but I figured that I’d post up a few video clips for those of you who may not play Guild Wars and aren’t familiar enough with it to put still images into context.

In any case, here’s a video montage from the Guild Wars Halloween event, showing off some of the fun extras the Guild Wars team put into the event.

These next three videos are previews for Nightfall, showing off some of the new environments, monsters, characters, and features.

Going to try and post up my massive collection of Halloween / Nightfall screenshots tomorrow, so beware.

Tyrian Travels: Ascalon Adventures, part 6

Guild Wars mapping again. Unfortunately I’m starting to see my desire to finish mapping all of Tyria wane, so I might wrap up this series when I get done with Ascalon. On the other hand, the imminent release of Nightfall later this month might rekindle my interest in the game somewhat. I’m not terribly excited for Nightfall, but taking a glance over at the screenshots page definitely has me craving some of the fantastic vistas and singleplayer adventure that Nightfall looks like it will have.

Areas covered in this installment: I started out with a desire to make sure I’d gotten the edges in Regent Valley, but I’d end up branching out into more than just this one zone as I ran this area of Ascalon.

GuildWars600

I entered Regent Valley from the northwest, so the first problem area I encountered was the fogged western edge of the map, bordering on the river there. I figured there must be some way to uncover at least a portion of the map there.

GuildWars601

Here’s my first spot of fog uncovered. You can see from the map that I’m not even very close to the edge, so chances are I’m missing out on a bit. The real trouble is finding how to get closer to the edge, which involves running around in the narrow valleys to the south before you can circle around to get heading north again. This movement to the south led me to the southwestern problem spot first, but I wasn’t able to uncover anything there.

GuildWars602

Here I am on the shore of the river. This is about as far as I could get, but netting the fog along the side there gave me .1% completion.

Next, I warped to Fort Ranik to check the northern fogged areas. (It was quicker to warp to Ranik and then backtrack on foot than it would’ve been to run from where I was on the map to where I was going.)

GuildWars603

Below is a picture of me looking directly at a corner of the map that netted me a spot of fog. Head directly forward from where my character is standing in the image and you’ll get it.

GuildWars604

Unfortunately even though I ran around this northern area for a bit more I wasn’t able to find any other fog spots to uncover or any paths that might allow me to get at any more.

Later I moved on to check up on some cloudy areas in Pockmark Flats.

GuildWars605

Here I am standing at the southern edge of this zone immediately after entering it from Regent Valley. I uncovered a spot of fog at the location of this screenshot.

GuildWars606

Moving along the southern border of the map I also came across this nice little find above. Uncovering the fog around this area netted me .1%. Be sure to check both the lower and the upper walkable areas in this vicinity.

GuildWars607

After finding that small bit of ruins I headed north, hugging the walls until I managed to uncover yet another small patch of fog. This one was in a rather unimpressive location, the edge of some random cliff wall. I took a screenshot of the area and highlighted it specifically since I was getting mobbed in order to get a screenshot with some visual reference to it.

GuildWars608

The above screenshot isn’t a patch of fog or anything, I just thought it was a nice vista, in a desolate sort of way.

Here’s the overall map of my progress through Pockmark Flats:

GuildWars610

As you can see in the image there is one more area I wanted to investigate, and that was far to the west. So I hoofed it over there.

GuildWars609

Sorry this image above is not very good. It’s the final piece of fog I uncovered in the Pockmark Flats area, over on the western side of that zone. Unfortunately there were no good reference points nearby, it’s just on the far edge.

-

At this point I was feeling a little bit irritated because I hadn’t managed to uncover the fog in the northern part of Regent Valley. In a last ditch attempt to get some of that fog I jumped in to the Fort Ranik mission quickly and looked around at the beginning of the mission area (which borders Regent Valley to the south).

GuildWars611

I did manage to find one small patch of fog over on the side of the mission path, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to find a way to get any further west.

Anyway, total gain for this run was about .3%, which was more than I was expecting, but then I did end up branching out into three different areas.

Last, I took a brief foray into the Fort Ranik mission to attempt to find one last patch of fog.

Guild Wars Halloween Contest

I went to the Guild Wars website yesterday and came across this:

GWHalloween2

You are invited to put your imagination and your creative talents to work in crafting Halloween art with a Guild Wars theme. We have some suggestions here for projects you might want to undertake (and you can see last year’s winners for inspiration, too):

* Carve a Guild Wars Pumpkin or create a pumpkin-carving pattern.
* Fashion a Guild Wars costume for yourself.
* Design a costume for your Guild Wars character.
* Create a Guild Wars Wallpaper or Desktop Art.
* Devise a “treat” with a Guild Wars flavor.
* Decorate your house in a Guild Wars theme.
* Find your own way to bring a Halloween twist to Guild Wars, or a Guild Wars twist to Halloween.

GWHalloween3

Kind of interesting. This sounds like the sort of thing I’m inclined to do anyway, in particular the bit about designing a costume for a Guild Wars character or creating a Guild Wars wallpaper. I looked over the prizes– First prize is nice, the others aren’t remarkable but it’d hardly be worth complaining if I won something. The page links to last year’s winners. Some of them are nice, but there are a number that I’m certain I could beat if I tried. I linked only the best images here — Some of the others are noticeably bad.

GWHalloween1

As such, I’m thinking about entering. We’ll see if I can make time between now and the end of this contest.

Nightfall’s End

The Guild Wars: Nightfall Preview event ended sometime earlier today. On the one hand, I’m relieved. On the other hand, I’m disappointed.

I’m relieved because I was seriously straining trying to make some time this weekend to play the event. The end of the event means relaxation and relief. What was done was done, and nothing more can change it.

I’m disappointed because I didn’t have enough time to complete the preview event. I consider that a pretty ringing endorsement for the game — If the preview event is too extensive to complete in one weekend, I can’t help but think how much more extensive the full campaign will be.

Anyway, for the time being I’m a bit Guild Wars-ed out, and will give myself a few days before I go into my screenshot repository for pictures or critiques of the new game.

Guild Wars Nightfall: Dervish Dolls

With the Nightfall preview event going on since yesterday, I had some time to jump in the game and take a look at the new content. Aside from downloading a huge amount of content for the new release, more than I’ve ever downloaded previously, the first thing I did when I jumped in the game was to take a look at the new character appearances.

Both previous Guild Wars have had some fantastic options for making really attractive characters, so I was eager to see Nightfall’s expansion of these options. I’ve taken about 100 or so screenshots thus far so it’s going to take me awhile to upload all of my pictures. Expect some updates to this post.

Naturally one of the first classes I looked at was the Dervish:

NightfallPreviewDervish1

This hairstyle doesn’t look like much from the front…

NightfallPreviewDervish4

But the side is more promising…

NightfallPreviewDervish2

…the long hair in the back is extremely beautiful. The jewelry used to keep the hair in the tail like that is simple but functional and attractive.

NightfallPreviewDervish5

This one, again, is fairly plain face-on…

NightfallPreviewDervish6

But the ponytail here is very nice, although it could use a little more volume to it.

NightfallPreviewDervish7

This is one of the more noticeable hair styles in the character creation process, as it seems to be one of the few Dervish styles that isn’t a pulled-back hairstyle. It’s nice, but not excellent.

NightfallPreviewDervish8

The layering effects seen from the sides offer a nice sense of volume, although there are some angles where you view the hair polygons edge-on and it spoils the effect.

NightfallPreviewDervish9

However, I think the back kind of looks bland and flat. A little bit more attention could have been paid to making it look distinctive in the back as well.

NightfallPreviewDervish3

The above style is probably my favorite of the bunch, combining the classy look of a stylized bun with the short off-the-shoulder tail to add a bit of uniqueness to it.

NightfallPreviewDervish10

Not a big fan of dreadlocks.

NightfallPreviewDervish11

This is a bland style, in my opinion, but I’m sure there are people that like it.

Below I have a series showing off the browsing windows for hair styles, hair colors, and face styles for Dervishes.

NightfallPreviewDervish12

NightfallPreviewDervish13

NightfallPreviewDervish14

Personally, a few more hairstyles would be appreciated. Although I must say, all of the Nightfall hairstyles, even the ones I don’t like aesthetically, are typically much better executed than any of the Prophecies hairstyles. Lots of long hair and voluminous hair … Most of the Prophecies styles are closely-cropped or buns. I do feel like having a “bald” option is essentially a cop-out as a style, though.

The colors are fine, but I would like more options with regard to colors. I feel like every character class should have the same color options, perhaps a total of about 16 or more. Restricting hair colors to professions doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

The faces are alright — My main problem is the latter four all have inhuman grey-white-blue eyes. Other than slight variations in eyebrow arches and eye colors, none of them are all that distinctive from each other, though. I think there should be a few more options available for faces, even if it’s just an existing face with palette shifted eyes.

Other classes next…

Guild Wars: Nightfall Preview Weekend

Quick update here for those who might be interested:

The Guild Wars Nightfall Preview Weekend is going on right now. Even if you don’t have a Guild Wars account you can play this weekend for free using the keys provided by ArenaNet here. It’s a pretty good opportunity to check out Guild Wars if you’ve never tried it.

I’ve ended up spending some time taking screenshots of some of the new content, which I’ll post up perhaps tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to play through the various quests and such as well, but, as usual, I’m pretty busy this weekend.
